3: Nature Parks and Attractions Nearby

If you go a short way outside of Wesley Chapel, you will encounter even more nature. A few places to explore include the following
To the southeast lies the Hillsborough River State Park. Experience the true Florida wilderness here with seven miles of trails to hike. The park also has a waterway for canoeing or kayaking. With one of the few Class II rapids in the state, you’re sure to enjoy a bit of a challenge as you make your way down the river.

If picnicking is more to your liking, the park has several pavilions available for all your family and friend get-togethers. It also has a pool with poolside café for a more modern experience.

Fishing is another pastime here at the park. All you need is a freshwater fishing license and your own fishing gear. Camping sites are available as well.

This park even has a little Florida history thrown in. The Fort Foster Historic Site is home to a reconstructed fort from the early 1880s. Dating back to the Seminole Indian Wars, the purpose of the original fort was to protect a supply road bridge. Occasional reenactments still take place here.
For a more primitive outdoor experience, be sure to visit Cypress Creek Preserve. The 7,400-acre preserve falls under the protection of SWFWMD, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, and offers recreational features to the public.

You will need to leave your vehicle outside the preserve, however, unless you have a camping reservation. Camping is primitive tent camping only and allows for equestrian camping as well.

With a paved multi-use trail for walking and cycling, there are also some 19 miles of natural trails available. These can be used by hikers, riders on horseback, and even off-road bicycles.

The variety of nature here is striking, providing famous Florida hammocks, flatwood prairies, and low-lying swamps.
